I've been trying to track down the music/composers for the songs in the 1969 NFL Films movie "The Young, The Old, & The Bold". I really like the music in that film because it is unlike most of the NFL Films songs. More jazzy, less "pomp and circumstance". Anyway, I've found two of the songs from the movie:

David Lindup - Zodiac (Bart Starr profile)

Keith Mansfield - Brass in Action (Fran Tarkenton)

There are several more pieces that I just have no clue as to who the composer is. The film credits the music to a mysterious guy named Wayne Weiss, but it appears that he just chose the pieces that other people wrote.

In my search, I found this gem from the Super Bowl VII highlight video (George Allen's 30 minutes to live was now down to 21)

Johnny Pearson - Thunderbird

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjj1eK5fpFU&feature=fvst

Pearson, Lindup, and Mansfield were all jazz composers from England in the late 60's and early 70's. They definitely have a unique sound. Pearson also did the Monday Night Football theme.

I've been wondering who did this composition for years. Heard it once played at Tower records in the '80s, but didn't ask the desk who the artist was. As for some of the other early non-Spence
tracks? Search Syd Dale on youtube.

Some music from the Super Bowl VII highlight film...

"...but Pardee's Over the Hill Gang matched them throughout a bruising first quarter."

"A Bob Griese to Paul Warfield pass is no surpise, except when delivered on first down..."

"...and George Allen's 30 minutes to live was now down to 21."

Hasn't been much activity (other than spam) over the last few months, but it's opened a lot of doors for me. Yes, the KPM library was used quite a bit by NFL Films in the 70's and 80's. Here's some more to seek out -

*Hell Raisers (KPM 1002) - used in the SB 1 (GB/KC)
hilites
*Slipstream (KPM 1002) - used in SB 2 (GB/OAK), as
Hewritt Dixon
tries to run on GB.
*Take a Break (KPM 1112) - SB 7 as Brig Owens makes an INT and during the
long run by Csonka.
*Documentary Department (KPM 1110) - SB 8 opening
*Flashback (KPM 1037) - used in SB 8, MIA/MIN
*Power Montage (KMP 1037) - middle part of it is used
in SB 5
(BAL/DAL), when the ball is fumbled out of the
endzone after Cornell
Green causes Eddie Hinton to fumble.
*Artful Dodger (KPM 1049) - used in SB 5, when Unitas
throws to
Mackey for a TD on the tipped pass. This tune has a
chorus singing.
*Floresuqe (KPM 1094) - in SB 6 in the Lance Alworth sequence
*The Big One (KPM 1136) - used in SB 9, MIN/PIT
*Heavy Action (KPM 1136) - used in SB 9, also known
as the MNF theme.
*Danger Man (KPM 1136) - used in SB 10, DAL/PIT, as
Cliff Harris and
Dallas shut down Franco Harris. (..."Franco
Harris, of all people, took his eyes off
a perfect pass.")
*Energy Vibrations (KPM 1136) - in SB 9, MIN/PIT,
when Vikes' Jackie
Wallace is tested
*Action In Memphis (KPM 1110) - used in SB 9
*Leader of the Pack (KPM 1136) - SB 9, ("Tarkenton
was a darting deer among a pack of howling
wolves.")
*Industrial Power (KPM, forgot the vol) - SB 9 as MIN walks off at
halftime
*Big Wheels (KPM 1136) - in SB 10, DAL/PIT, when
Reggie Harrison
blocks a punt for a safety.
*Express Delivery (KPM 1137) - I believe used in SB 8
(MIA/MIN)
*Gathering Crowds (KPM 1138) - used at start of SB 9,
MIN/PIT - also
used as closing theme to This Week in Baseball.
*World Series (KPM 1110) - used in SB 9, also for, ironically, World
Series
*Espionage (KPM 1190) the opening music for "Doomsday in the Dome" (SB XII)
*Glass Tubes (KPM 1162) - used in SB 12, DAL/DEN as
Rick Upchurch
returns a punt for Denver. Also I believe was used
in ads for
Corning Glass?
*National Enterprise (KPM 149) - in SB 14, as the fans hold up the
shiny silver cards
*Worldbeater (KPM 1248) "...but not all was well with the Eagle' gameplan"
*Newsweek (KPM 2) - used in SB 18 (OAK/WAS) as the
Raider D stops
Riggins.
*20th Century Revolution (KPM 2)- in SB 18, as
Derrick Jensen blocks
a punt
*The Final Mile (KPM 2) - used in SB 21, NYG/DEN I
think as Simms is
completing passes left and right.

The Network music library was also used -

*Choppin Block (Network #6) - Used in SB 14, when "Ferragamo was
sacked several times"
*Energy (Network #6) - on Lynn Swann's TD and Rams' halfback option
TD in SB 14
*Strings in Bondage (Newtork #2) - used in SB 16 on Earl Cooper's TD
*The Chase (Network #23) - Jimmy Cefalo's TD in SB XVII
*Trackdown (Network #22) - Fulton Walker's TD in SB XVII
*Breaking the Tape (Network #31) - Roger Craig's final TD in SB XIX

Couple "Holy Grails" that still haven't been IDed -

*The music used in SB V when "the Cowboys' hopes were shattered on the rocks of the Colts' defense" (was used a few other times, as well)

*The music used with Riggins' TD is initially shown in SB XVII

Hello Fellow Members,

I am a new member and I have been searching for some of the tunes from NFL Films
(1968-1977) for over 40 years. One of my problems was I thought that they were
all composed by the Great Sam Spence. However, my research has proven to me that
some, maybe most, of my "lost treasures" are probably not his tunes. This fact
has been a tremendous disappointment for me.

Recently, I have found several of the tunes on the internet that I have been
seeking for but I do not know the names, the composers or where to get them. I
was wondering if any of you know the names of any of the tunes, or their
composers, or where to get them in the list below. Any help you can give will be
greatly appreciated!

(1)Do you know the name of the tune or its composer located at 10:02 of the 1970
Browns -1 of 2? (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=RdzG2fTksVI)

(2)Do you know the names of the tunes or the composers located at 9:13, 10:47,
13:59, 15:55, and of "Duel in the Dust" (The 1970 Raiders at the Colts)?

(3)Do you know the name or the composer of the tune located at 1:11 of 1973 wk
14 DtL at MmD? (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=v_lPju2eCv0)

(4)Do you know the name or the composer of the tune that begins at 1:51 of the
1972 Redskins Team Highlights Part 1?

(5)Do you know the name or the composer of the tune that begins at 11:02 of the
1969 Redskins Team Highlights Part 2?

(6)Do you know the name or composer to the tune that begins at .37 of the 1975
wk 4 Patriots at Bengals? (http://www.youtube.c...h?v=iwrJ4YbiwGM)

(7) Do you know the name or composer to the tune used by NFL on CBS 1980
(http://www.youtube.c...h?v=9tv9cQq4EVY)

(8)Do you know the name or composer to the tune located at the very beginning of
The Baltimore Colts at the New York Giants: Week 12, 1975 and at 6:26
(http://www.hulu.com/...ts-week-12-1975)

Any information any of you can provide would be a gift beyond imagination.

Unfortunately I do not. I know that some of the de Wolfe albums and songs are offered on iTunes, but it's just a fraction of their vast catalogue. De Wolfe vinyl albums will sometimes show up on eBay as well including many of the 1960s and 1970s vintage offerings.

Here is a copy of Horizontal Hold, the NFL Today theme song from the '70's. Remember, the version used on CBS was a highly edited version of this song, but all the elements are still there.....ENJOY!
